De hoofdletter Pijn. Het noodlot komt net zo onverwachts als de dood, stelt een personage vast. Maar het noodlot en de dood komen niet alleen onverwachts in de fictie van Ramon Gieling: ze komen hoe dan ook. In De Hoofdletter Pijn zijn dood en verdriet onvermijdelijk. Liefde overwint alles? Nee. Ook de liefde brengt geen uitkomst. De Hoofdletter Pijn is de nieuwe verhalenbundel van schrijver, regisseur en beeldend kunstenaar Ramon Maria Gieling. Deze titel is volmaakt gekozen; dood, verdriet en depressie voeren de boventoon. Kanker, dode baby’s, incest: alles passeert op bizarre wijze de revue. De verhalen zijn grensoverschrijdend en onvoorspelbaar; ze gaan over pijn, maar ook over liefde. Liefde en pijn gaan moeiteloos in elkaar over: geliefden sterven samen in een innige omhelzing en een moeder houdt zoveel van haar kind, dat haar man haar verlaat. De grens tussen pijn en liefde vervaagt steeds meer.

In een aflevering uit 2012 is Wim Brands in gesprek met de regisseur van de film En un Momento Dado, Ramon Gieling. Over zijn boek De hoofdletter pijn, onverfilmbare verhalen. Brands stelt vragen die verhalen ontlokken aan de schrijver, tijd speelt geen rol. Hij lokt de schrijver met een,’Toe, vertel nu nog even hoe dat citaat van Luis Buñuel gaat dat voor in het boek staat. Kun je dat? Uit je hoofd?’ Want uit het hoofd, dan staat een tekst pas echt, wordt het een boegbeeld. En de schrijver kon dat, hij sprak: ‘Als ik morgen op straat een overleden vriend zou tegenkomen, zou ik niet denken aan een wonder. Ik zou gewoon denken: Luis, daar heb je nou weer typisch iets wat je niet begrijpt.’
Dit was dus zo’n boek dat ik moest hebben. Om de titel, het citaat van Buñuel, en dan die verhalen, schrijnend mooie verhalen, niet te filmen zo mooi.

‘Let me tell you that I’ve finished Sisyphus at work, and it’s a masterpiece that moved me immensely. Even if you had not revealed the memoir nature of the movie, I would have surely guessed it. Clues to discover that are abundant! I grasped the intertextuality with several cinema history movies and those of your own, your past, and the unconscious desires of every human being that date back to mythologies. And I cried, at times feeling shocked, anxious, nostalgic, passionate, lucky, and desperate. I need to see it again in my secret rendezvous with your movies that start in the evening around 8.5 PM. 

Your movies take time to settle down, and I find something fresh in them in every new watch! So I do not want to jump to write about them, without having first absorbed the world thoroughly and deeply. Sometimes, I think my feeling can only be endured in music! not words.

‘Words fall short of handing my emotions on to you. I wonder if melodies* could do justice to this transference for a client soon celebrating the 10th anniversary of her weekly ventures on a carper-covered psychoanalysis couch. No gift could have come more timely than the link to your latest production, which was almost impossible for me to watch had you not given it to me for free. (The internet is largely filtered here and our banks are cut off from the world financial systems; hence the impossibility of online payment/subscription). When you kindly responded to my email on Friday, everything changed. I was itching for the night to fall to turn on the projector and fully immerse myself in your visual, musical, and philosophical odyssey I knew for sure was a masterpiece. And I was right, as it took my breath away once again and indulged me in the sublimated sensuality of your art. Yes, it is… art is sensual, cinema is amorous and we flirt with ideas and images, as Freud beautifully put it: at the end of the day, it is all about sexuality! In the few days since you sent me the link, I have watched L’Amour La Mort over and over again, sometimes sobbing but each time joyfully deciphering a point concealed in a corner. And I can tell you that I’ve LOVED it to the moon and back. I digested it, both thematically and technically with my limited knowledge of cinema, keeping many of the dialogues in mind. How harmonious, sincere, and impressive the stories are! And how seamlessly they merge into each other. I think your movie is a mirror each viewer can relate to from a personal standpoint and at the same time see part of themselves reflected in it.

Johan Heldenbergh, Belgium actor in Sisyphus at Work, wrote about 19 Days and 500 Nights:

‘Het spreekt over wat het betekent een man te zijn, het spreekt over eenzaamheid. Het is troostend en louterend. 
Het spreekt over hoe een volk liederen zingt over zichzelf en hoe diep littekens uit het verleden een volksaard tekenen. Of hoe, zoals mijn favoriete schrijver het verwoordde: ‘Je hebt problemen nodig om te schrijven, en in Nederland zijn er geen.’
